Hello!
I hope you are all well and had a lovely weekend.
I was very sad and disappointed to learn on Friday evening that I won't get to see you again this school year. It was not really surprisng but I think a part of me was hoping we might get some more time in our classroom together before June.
However, it is for the best and important for us all to stay the course with patience so we will soon be able to see all our loved ones again safely ... I for one can't wait to see my family again!
Here's the work for this week. As usual just do what you can ... Keep safe.
Best wishes,
Ms M cQuaid

Big Book -Cars, Trains and Airplanes- Lesson 1
Introduction and discussion- Read and discuss the title of the big book ‘Cars, Trains and Airplanes’. Ask the following questions:
- Is this an information text or a story?
- How do you know?
- What other type of information texts have we covered? (Revise the procedural text ‘Let’s Make Pizza!’, Unit 13).
- What are the three ways we can travel based on the text title? (Prediction)
- Have you ever gone on a holiday? How did you get there?’ (Making connections)
Modelled reading- Read through the text, pause from time to time to discuss vocabulary and make predictions. The aim at this stage is to model and instil interest in the storyline.
Listen and sing along!

Maths:
Today we are looking at the concept of full and empty. Emphasise to the children that full means full to the top. Gather some different containers –plastic beakers, pots, bottles, any containers you have to hand easily. Get your child to fill the various containers to the top with water. Ask questions such as
- Which holds more?
- How many of those little cups will it take to fill this bottle?
- How many sponges will it take to fill the container?

Poster- Holiday Fun Lesson 1
Story mode- Play Story mode 1 and discuss the vocabulary. Discuss the girls’ own experience of holidays.
Explore mode: Talk and discussion
Go to the Explore mode of the poster. Tell children to look at the poster carefully, then ask them to try to solve the following poster puzzles:
You use me to build a castle.
Or let me run through your hand.
I cover the entire beach.
I am the … (sand)
I am lots of fun to play with.
I bounce if you let me fall.
I am many brilliant colours,
I am a … (beach ball)
I’m found on people’s faces
As I’m something that they wear
I shield you from the sunlight
And always come as a pair.
What am I? (Sunglasses)
You use me every single day,
Many times I would bet.
The more that you get dry,
The more that I get wet!
What am I? (A towel)
Zoom in on individual items in the poster and encourage children to create their own ‘what-am-I?’ riddle about that item, e.g. Goggles: you wear me to cover your eyes when you are swimming underwater. When you come out of the water, you push me to the top of your head. What am I?

Maths:
Today we are looking at the numeral zero. Yesterday we were looking at some things which were empty, so we can say that there was no water left in some containers, there was nothing left, it had been taken away. Another way to say empty/ none left is to use the numeral zero so we can relate ‘empty’ or ‘nothing’ to the number 0.
Make a set of 3 objects (buttons, spoons, pencils, lego pieces - anything you have to hand) Say “here is a set of 3 spoons. I’m taking away 1,2,3. How many are left?” (zero) Do the same for 2, 4, 5 – take away the objects until there is none left and get the child to say zero.
Get the child to write the numeral zero. It looks like the letter o!!

Big Book Lesson 2
Shared reading, engagement and participation- Read the interactive book, particularly focusing on fluency of reading. Encourage your child to copy or join in the second time round, using appropriate intonation. Encourage them to use rising intonation for sentences ending in a yes/no question, e.g. p. 2, 9; and falling intonation for sentences ending with a ‘wh’ question, e.g. p. 13
You can also listen to the story being read aloud by clicking Play all on the bottom tool bar. Click on the headphone symbols at the top of each page to do little activities for each page.
Storytime
Play the story The Big Trip by Valeri Gorbachev:

Afterwards, ask the following questions:
- What are the modes of transport listed in the story? How many of them have you tried?
- Why does Goat think it is best to go on a trip with a friend?
- What mode of transport do you think is the best for taking a trip? Why?

Poster Lesson 2
Play Story mode 2: Recap, making sure they understand all the vocabulary.
Go to the Question mode of the poster. Listen to each question and discuss the answers with the children briefly.
Underwater wonders
Explain that the ocean is very wide and deep. We can see what is happening over the water, but we can’t see what’s happening underneath the surface of the water. Present the following riddle:
Can you solve this riddle? It’s something we can’t see on the poster. What is it and why can’t we see it?
I have a very big bite
But I do not ever bark…
I live in the ocean
I have a fin. I am a … (shark)
Play the story of The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister on YouTube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFORvXhub28
Listen to the story carefully, then ask the following questions:
- Where did the Rainbow Fish live? (In the ocean)
- What is the difference between the ocean and the sea? (The ocean is larger and deeper)
- What did the Rainbow Fish learn? (That sharing your things makes you happier than keeping them all to yourself)
- What other types of fish did you hear about in the story? (starfish; octopus)
- Can you name any other fish in the ocean (crabs; seahorses; sea anemones; jellyfish, etc.)
- Can you describe them so that we can tell how each one is different? (Encourage them to use the most descriptive language possible to differentiate the sea creatures, e.g. a jellyfish is wobbly and can give you a sharp sting, a crab has a hard shell and pincers, an octopus has a lot of tentacles, etc.)

Revise writing x and j
You could practice writing and drawing a picture of some short words with x and j.
e.g. fox, jet
Maths:
Write the numerals 0 – 5.
Art:
Usually we do lovely underwater themed art when we read the Rainbow Fish… It’s one of my favourite stories! The girls could colour or paint their own underwater scene, with the rainbow fish. They could use tinfoil to create his pretty, shiny scales if they wished.

Extra ideas:
Opposites
In the poster can you see …
- Something hot (sand, people, sunshine) and something cool (ice-cream, sundress, sea)
- Something dry and something wet; something solid and something liquid; something bright and something dark
- Someone lying down and standing up; someone jumping and staying still; something right side up and upside down
Ask children to look at the poster and discuss the following categories. Categorise the various items after they have been named.
- Clothes we wear at the beach, e.g. swimming togs/trunks; sunhat; sunglasses; flip-flops; sandals, shorts; t-shirt; wetsuit
- Food/drink we have at the beach, e.g. picnic foods – sandwiches, crisps, biscuits, fruit, juice, lemonade ice-cream, water; barbeque foods – burgers, sausages, hotdogs, chicken wings, lettuce, tomato
- Equipment we bring to the beach, e.g. rug; towels; deckchair; umbrella, windshield, beach ball, armbands, swimming ring, sunscreen, kite
‘S’ is for sea, sun and sand!
Ask children, how many ‘s’ words can you name that having something to do with summer?
Sea, sand, sun, sunglasses, sunscreen, sundress, sandcastle, summer, sail, sailboat, saltwater, sandals, seagull, seashell, seaweed, starfish, sunbathe, sunburn, sunhat, suntan, surf, surfboard, swim, swimming cap, swimsuit
Where is it? Focus word: Between
Ask the following questions, focusing on the positional word ‘between’.
- Where is the hat in the picture? (Between the flip flops and the swimming trunks)
- Where is the dog in the picture? (Between the girl and the suitcases)
- Where is the boy in the picture? (Between the girl surfing and the girl eating an ice-cream)
- Can you find something that is between two other things in the picture? (e.g. sunglasses, swimming trunks, girl eating ice cream, two girls in the swimming ring). Encourage full sentences from the children here, e.g. The sunglasses in the picture are between the sunscreen and the flip flops.
